THE ELK CITY JAM-PAGE . . .
WARNING -- for fans only

Most Elk City songs start out as heedless improvisations. We usually spend a good portion of each practice jamming, trying out new ideas, making stuff up. We have a recording studio (the WOMB) to rehearse in, so we record all of these improvs. A couple days after a practice, or whenever Ray gets around to it, we put the best moments on cds to listen to and to consider working into songs. It's one of the band's great pleasures to listen to and think about these raw ideas. Maybe they're moments only their mothers could love--for they certainly meander and stumble. Then again, they are sometimes powerful in their immediacy and freshness. Either way, we think certain people will enjoy hearing these off-the-cuff moments, and appreciate getting a closer look into E.C.'s songwriting process. What lyrics there are are being made up on the spot, as are the various musical parts. Some of these are worked on later and polished up a bit, while others we never come back to, either because they don't make good "songs" or we simply couldn't recreate the spirit.

So, here are the Elks, kicking out the jams. Make what you will of them . . .
